Malacca Food -Saturday Ice Cafe

~ FOODS in MALACCA~

Saturday Ice Cafe has been operating for many many many years. It's funny...I went to a school which is located very near to this cafe but I have NOT BEEN to this cafe during my school time. Probably because I always joined my group of friends to the Mee Hun Kueh shop which is nearby this cafe. Ooopss.....sort of missing the mee hun kueh time..~Hahahahahaha~

Well, this is my first visit to this cafe. Saturday Ice Cafe is famous with their Ice Pat Poh and there is a stall that operates in front of the shop that sells scrumptious Char Kway Teow ( Fried Flat Noodles). I knew it long time ago but I don't know why, I only visit this place after so many years. Better late than never huh!!

Saturday Ice Cafe @ Jalan Parameswara

Fried Flat Noodles (Char Kuey Tiow)

They said Malaccans have weird taste-buds because they have wan tan mee which is not served with dark soy sauce and they eat Fried flat noodles with sweet bean sauce. I think this is what makes Malacca so special. Malaccans out there....agree with mee? The fried flat noodles in KL is somehow different, I have not came accross fried flat noodles served with sweet sauce.

Saturday Night @ RM 2.00 per bowl

I wanted to order their Ice Pat Poh, but I can't find "Ice Pat Poh" in their menu list until I decided to order Saturday Night. Anyway, I enjoyed the dessert and am too full to have more. I wish I can stay there and try at least more than 5 of their desserts but I can't. My stomach gonna burst soon!!

Menu of Saturday Ice Cafe
Am heading back to K and I start to miss more of Malacca food now... Asam Pedas Ikan Pari, Mee Goreng at Tanjung Kling, Mee Rebus at Ujong Pasir, seafood at Portuguese Settlements , Nyonya foods.........Bye bye.. I will be back!!

Malacca Food -Duck Noodles @ Soon Yen, Tengkera

~ FOODS in MALACCA~

To truly experience Malacca, one must dine at one of the many hawker stalls around the state. This is one of the stall that offers Malacca style of duck noodles. There are several famous stall in Malacca which sells duck noodles, I normally visit the stall in Malim Jaya. But, this round, I tried the stall that operates at Kedai Kopi & Makanan Soon Yen, Tengkera. There is another well known stall at Bukit Beruang too.

11.15 a.m

Kedai Kopi & Makanan Soon Yen, Tengkera

Duck Noodles (Dry) @ RM 2.50 per bowl

The stalls sells both soup and dry version of duck noodles. As usual, I ordered the dry duck noodles to eat it with the chilli sauce. The dry duck noodles comes with some thick special sauce and shredded braised duck meat. A bowl of herbal duck soup is served together. The soup has a tinge of spices and herbs. Besides that, there do have other add-ons that you can choose which are the braised dried bean curd, marinated egg, duck feet and duck organs too.

I am definitely not a big fan of duck meats or dishes. For me, this is considered a good and unique dish in Malacca.

Malacca Food -Satay Celup @ Ban Lee Siang

~ FOODS in MALACCA~

Satay celup is another dish that is peculiar in Malacca. Can I name it as Chinese version of fondue? Few of my friends think that it is unhygienic to consume satay celup, well.........the answer is yes and no. Any comments?

About Satay Celup

Satay Celup or Steamboat Satay is a popular dish in Historical City of Malacca. All kinds of raw and semi-cooked meat, seafood and vegetables one skewers are dunked into a boiling pot of satay sauce(similar) cook at the table just like the steamboat style.

12.10 a.m

Satay Celup @ Kedai Makanan Ban Lee Siang

Huh.... it's already midnight and still that croweded? I guess those people are just as hungry as me! Wait....am I hungry? Honestly, I am not.....I just feeling like having satay celup. So, Ban Lee Siang is the place that I prefer for Satay Celup instead of Capitol Satay Celup. As for me, the sauce here taste better and even the service here is much better.

An assortment of raw & semi-cooked food on skewers. Price range from RM 0.50 -1.00 /skewer

The delicious thick and aromatic sauce boiling in a pot at the middle of the table

Satay celup is sold in a self service mode. Once seat, the food on skewers can which is kept fresh in the huge refrigerators can be taken immediately using trays provided. Price are reasonable and do order some cold drinks as it's abot stuffy if you are sitting inside and besides that, the sauce is abit spicy too.

Satay Celup, is definitely something worth to try if you are in Malacca!!

When I suggested to have Ikan Bakar today, my dear sister seems quite excited about it. I bet my sister and her husband both enjoyed the dinner as much as I did! If you are not a local, the route to Seri Muara Alai might not be easy to locate, even some locals doesn't know this place.

There are severals places in Malacca like Medan Ikan Bakar Pernu in Umbai or Ikan Bakar at Murara Sungai Duyong. Somehow, this is still my favorite restaurant for Ikan Bakar as they offer more selections of
FRESH SEAFOOD! and the Malay Hokkien speaking owner is friendly too! Prices are reasonable too!

Malacca Food -Ming Sate Hut (鸡场街)

~ FOODS in MALACCA~
So...I am one of the Malacca who have not tried the pork satay before!! I have heard so much about it and this is my first time trying the famous pork satay in Malacca. It so happen that I spotted Ming Sate Hut (鸡场街) while I was on my way to Nadeje Patisserie which is a few shops away from Ming Sate Hut (鸡场街).

5.06 p.m.

Ming Sate Hut (鸡场街) @ Plaza Mahkota, Malacca

About satay/sate

Satay or sate is a dish consisting marinated chunks of dice-sized meat on skewers and grilled over charcoal fire, then served with sate sauce. Sate sauce is a spicy peanut sauce dip to eat along with satays, cucumber, onions and ketupat (rice cake).

Satay is popular dish in Indonesia and it may be the place where this dish originated but it is also a popular dish throughout Southeast Asian countries.

Pork & Chicken Satay By Ming Sate Hut @ RM 0.55 per satay
The size of the satay is small, smaller than those we have from satay vendors but the chunk meats are tender with small portions of fats in between. Meats were marinated with tumeric and taste well but not like those usual taste of satay. It's different in taste. I guess one of the reason that this satay is special it is because of the tender meat and it's a pork satay as in Malaysia, we can rarely find pork satay because most satay vendors are selling halal satays.

Ming Sate Hut serves satay with pineapple-based satay sauce, which I don't really like it. The sourness of the sauce covered the aroma of the peanut based. We are too full to order ketupat to eat along since we are heading for Ikan Bakar this evening, but we ordered slivered onions and cucumbers as I believe cucumbers helps to detoxify. But we need to pay extra RM 0.50 for it, although it's cheap but we get it free even from satay vendors!

Address of Ming Sate Hut

Hahahahaha...I am now a Malaccan that have tried the pork satay! I have heard that there are few better places that serves pork satay. Well, perhaps next time!

Malacca Food -Mille Crepe Cake @ Nadeje Patisserie

~ FOODS in MALACCA~

Nadeje Patisserie sells the best Mille Crepe Cake!! Am lucky that I have more time for food this round, and I did stop by Nadeje's for their Mille Crepe Cake.

4.17 p.m.

Nadeje Patisserie @ Plaza Mahkota, Malacca
Nadeje Patisserie started their business by selling only one type of cake which is the Mille Crepe cake, which then they offered more varieties of crepe cakes and few other types of cakes as well. I have not tried other flavors of the crepe cakes they are selling as yet, not because I don't want to, it's because it's always SOLD OUT!! Well, obviously their business are doing good and they even have another outlet in Dataran Pahlawan Megamall now!

Mille Crepe Cake (original flavour) RM 8.50, whole cake @ RM 70++

Something about Crepe
After some searching from the web, I found out that crepes are especially popular in France. A crepe is a type of a very thin, light and delicate cooked pancake which originates from Britanny, a region in the northwest of France. Mille crepe is a cake made of many crepe layers, and "Mille"(mil) means " a thousand" implying many layers of the crepe.

Calpis Hibiscus Tea Soda @ RM 8.50
I want to try have something other than coffee. Flip ...flip flip...and I was attracted to the CALPIS Drink page! It I then ordered the Calpis Hibiscus Tea Soda, a drink which is sweet and tangy in taste.

What is CALPIS? A flower or a type of fruit or.....???

Something about Calpis
CALPIS is a Japanese uncarbonated soft drink. The beverage is a light and milky drink with slight acidic flavor similar to plain or vanilla flavored yogurt. Basically, it's a lactic acid beverage which is well known in Japan.

Nadeje Patiserrie offers deliciously and fresh baked mille crepe and satisfying drinks. It's all about quality and taste!! Nadeje Patiserrie is the answer!

The secret of a good Nyonya laksa is its creamy, curried but not so thick coconut broth! Donald & Lily serves the best Nyonya Laksa in town!

Bak Kut Teh @ Heng Kee, PJ Old Town

When I was a UOB credit card holder, I used to visit Heng Kee once a month. It's not because they accept credit card huh......it's because there is an UOB bank nearby for me to make my payments. Anyway..to dine for delicious Bak Kut Teh in PJ, Heng Kee is the place you should visit, a restaurant which is awarded as Bak Kut Teh King in Petaling.

Something about Bak Kut Teh:

Bak Kut Teh, literally translated as "meat bone tea", was introduced to Malaya in the 19th Century by Chinese workers from Fujian. It was widely believed that this dish is invented in Port Klang by the port coolies, and this dish helps them to gain energy and boost their health.

Bak Kut Teh is a chinese herbal soup dish consist of meaty pork ribs with boiled with herbs and spices boiled with pork bones for hours. Additional side dishes served with this dish may includes varieties of mushrooms, lettuce, pieces of tofu. Bak Kut Teh usually eaten with rice and served with fried crullers/yu tiao to dunk it into the broth to absorb the flavour of the broth. As for condiments, cut chillies and minced garlic is taken together.

Bak Kut Teh @ Heng Kee PJ Old Town

Many prefers Bak Kut Teh to be serve in claypot, but in Heng Kee it is served in bowls. The broth are extremly delicious so for me, it doesn't matter if it is serve in claypot or not. Porks are tender and infused with the aroma of herbs and spices.

Heng Kee is always crowded and the business has been operating for more than 20 years. To enjoy a sumptuous Bak Kut Teh with prompt service and friendly owner, this is the place you should or perhaps MUST VISIT!! Although I don't need that much of energy, but somehow, I still like their Bak Kut Teh....so will let the energy to turn into fats around my waistline/ butt ~

Dome Cafe @ Lot 10 Shopping Mall ( CLOSED)

For many times when we pass by Dome cafe, I will say " I miss their spaghetti and cappuccino!" Finally, we went there for lunch and it turned out to be disappointing lunch for me. "Complain Queen" is once my nick name, but I only complain on things or matters that should be complain
okay!!

Iced Peach Tea @ RM 9.50, Relaxing herbals-Green & Ginger Tea @ RM 10.50 each
Not having their coffee this today, had 2 cups in the morning already! Opted for their relaxing herbals which is the hot green tea served in silver service as I knew this is gonna be a heavy lunch!

Spicy Chicken Mushroom Pasta @ RM 21.00
A disappointing lunch, this is totally different with what I had in the Mid Valley & Subang Parade outlet! The taste is different and the chicken meat is not fresh at all, the meat has a strong frozen and then defrosted smell, the fridge smell (you get what I mean?) I ended having only their spaghetti, and then commented to one of the waiter who served us. He then came back with a reply that he checked the batch of chicken and it is not expired, and they actually soaked the chicken meat with hot water before cooking it. "Aha...so?, it still taste weird and not fresh"
Anyway, he mentioned that he will bring the message to the chef! ~ I hope so~
In my mind- "I am telling you it is not fresh, so you gotto do something with it...okay...By the way, IF it the chicken meat has expired, will you come out and tell me that it is???? "

Gourmet Chicken & Mushroom Pie @ RM 21.00
Home style chicken and mushroom filling in a porcelain bowl topped with golden baked pastry cap served with sauteed carrots, tomato and broccoli. The gourmet chicken and mushroom pie seems to be one of a popular serving by Dome Cafe, it must be a very filling and rich lunch, I think!

Chicken Ham Cheese & Tomato Gourmet Sandwich @ RM 18.50
Smoked chicken ham, cheese and tomato with mustard mayonnaise on loose mesclun served with tomato chutney and wedges.I think I will try their sandwiches next time with a cup of coffee...aaaahhhh...so nice, it's in my imagination right now!

Whatever it is.........I had my lunch....it is always this way, different outlet with different quality and taste of food. The only restaurant which with many outlets and not much different in food taste are Mc Donalds and KFC, I think.

I am sort of missing those days when I sit alone and enjoy my cup of coffee at Dome Cafe. Am getting lazier these days...don't even feel like going out from the house during weekends!!
