Fort Cornwallis @ Padang Kota, Penang

Fort Cornwallis located at Padang Kota (The Esplanade) marks the point where Sir Francis Light and his crew landed to take possession of the island from the Sultan of Kedah in 1786.

The star shaped fort was designed and built to protect the harbor from possible French attacks. It is also the first military and administrative base of the East India Company and was named after Charles Marquis Cornwallis, a Governor General of India.
