Fort Cornwallis located at Padang Kota (The Esplanade) marks the point where Sir Francis Light and his crew landed to take possession of the island from the Sultan of Kedah in 1786.
The star shaped fort was designed and built to protect the harbor from possible French attacks. It is also the first military and administrative base of the East India Company and was named after Charles Marquis Cornwallis, a Governor General of India.
Constructed in 1814 at the North West bastian of the fort to store explosive.
The fort was first built with nibong palm and then with brick in 1793. In 1810, the fort was rebuilt again. Today, Fort Cornwallis has been converted into a public park for tourist.
