Delights of Gurney Drive @ The Gardens, Mid Valley City- Revisit

A great catch up with Dior. She is back from Shanghai for a month bringing back a good news to me too. Am glad that she has finally decided to quit her job and move back to Malaysia. Dior was craving for some local food and since we met at The Gardens, we have decided to have our dinner at Delights of Gurney Drive.

A restaurant that I have covered earlier in January 2009 - Delights of Gurney Drive @ The Gardens, Mid Valley City

Lor bak
It's rather rare to find delicious lor bak in KL/PJ. Agree or not agree? Or do you have any suggestions for me? Well, I found one at Delights of Gurney Drive. Fresh and tasty not like those you find in the hawker stalls.

Char Kuey Tiow (Fried Flat Noodles)
Although not the same as the famous Char Kuey Tiow @ Lorong Selamat, Penang but Char Kuey Tiow @ Delights of Gurney Drive has its own character too. Fragantly fried over high heat wok with prawns and cockles. Smells good..... taste good too!

Curry Noodles
The presentation of the curry mee grabbed my atention. Noodles served in coconut milk and a portion of spicy sambals (chilly paste). Thick and spicy curry gravy but too oily. Taste of the curry ? Appealing!

Ahhh... I have lost the receipt but food here is not expensive at all and yet delicious. Thumbs up for their good service and comfortable environment too.

Seafood @ Restaurant Port Village, Tanjung Harapan, Northport Klang

Port Village, a seafood restaurant that used to be our favorite spot for seafood. It has been a long time since our last visit but the lady owner still remember us. The lady owner chatted with Patrick for a short while and according to her, business is dwindling due to the economic downturn as most of the factories near the industrial area ceased operation.

Feeling blessed, we placed our orders. We were too hungry and sorry for the blur pictures, I even missed taking a few pictures of other dishes.

Port Village Restaurant @ Tanjung Harapan, North Port, Klang
Restaurant was built on the far end of the pier with woods and stilts without much decorations. A restaurant with good service despite their crowds.

Fried potato leafs with sambal belacan @ RM 12.00
Out of words to describe the fried potato leafs. But then again, with a word- Pleasing!

Fried Crispy Red Snapper with Soy Sauce @ RM 24.00
Crispy and crunchy and we can chomp of every part of the fish leaving only the middle bone. Something different from steamed fish.

Gung Bo (Spicy) Fried Mantis Prawn @ RM 18.00
This seems to be like a "must order" dish each time we visit Port Village Restaurant. Mantis prawn fired to crispy and topped with chilly/spicy (gung bo) sauce. Scrumptious sweet and spicy!

Salted Egg Crabs 2kg @ RM 60.00
Tasty! Succulent sweet and saltish fragrantly fried crabs with salted eggs and sugar and garlic.

Still as good as before...... we enjoyed our dinner. Seafood lovers, do head to Port Village Restaurant for good quality seafood that satisfy one's taste buds.

Aliaa Seafood/Aliaa Nasi Kukus @ R&R Awan Besar, Kesas Highway

After ordering some satays, we walked around and noticed Aliaa Seafood with a banner hanging on the wall, Aliaa Nasi Kukus. The queue was long but we did placed our order. It's alright, we can wait while enjoying our satays..

About Nasi Kukus

Nasi kukus literally means steamed rice in English. Nasi kukus is believed to be originated from Northern part of Malaysia (Terenganu & Kelantan). Rice are placed in an aluminum bowl and steamed till cooked. The result of the cooked rice would be perfect in grain texture, light and fluffy and the shape of each cooked rice curls abit at the end.

Nasi kukus (steamed rice) is to be eaten with varieties of Malay dishes/cuisines like ayam goreng berempah, vegetables, fish, meats and curries.

Aliaa Seafood/ Aliaa Nasi Kukus @ R&R Awan Besar, Kesas Highway

Steamed rice and simple Malay dishes by Aliaa Seafood
Rice are placed in an aluminuum bowl and then steamed till ready to served. There are only limited selection of dishes served by Aliaa, which is:

RM 5.00: Nasi Kukus- Ayam Goreng Berempah ( Fried chicken)
RM 6.00: Nasi Kukus- Ikan Bakar ( grill fish- chooses your preferd fish)
RM 6.00: Nasi Kukus- Daging (meat dishes)
RM 2.00: Nasi Kukus sahaja (only steamed rice)
RM 3.00: Ayam Goreng Berempah sahaja (only fried chicken)
RM 4.00: Ikan bakar sahaja (only grill fish)

Cheap isn't it? How about the food? Ordered the Steamed rice with grilled fish..

Steamed rice (Nasi Kukus) is served with sambal belacen, chili padi in soy sauce and crunchy bean sprouts with tumeric and curry gravy on top. Love the curry gravy, it's aromatic and eating the rice with curry gravy and sambal belacan itself is already great enough.

Grilled stingray
The sting ray was wrapped with banana leaves and then grilled. The chilli paste was added in later. The chilli paste was good too. Yummy........

Seeking for something hot and spicy?

Sate Kajang Hj Samuri @ R&R Awan Besar, Kesas Highway

Sate HJ Samuri is popular since many many years ago... who doesn't know about this? It's not only popular in Kajang but throughout Malaysia. The business has expanded over the years with other few outlets at different area.

Am blessed that my place is quite near to one of their outlet which is located at the Awan Besar Reast & Relax stop along Kesas Highway.
In fact, there are a few stalls/restaurant which is worth a visit at R&R Awan Besar. One of the restaurant is recently covered by Precious Pea -Nasi Ayam Kampung @ Restoran A Hassan.

Sate Samuri @ R&R Awan Besar, Lebuhraya Shah Alam (Kesas Highway)

To taste the originality of Sate Kajang by Hj Samuri

Choices of satay by HJ Samuri:
  • Chicken
  • Beef
  • Fish
  • Beef Tripe
  • Chicken Liver
  • Lamb
  • Deer
  • Rabbit
Chicken Satay @ RM 0.60/skewer
Savory chicken skewers, well marinated and grilled to perfection. Tasted as good as before but the satay is shrinking in size Anyway, it goes extremely well with the delicious and unique satay sauce.

Fish Satay @ RM 0.60/skewer
I don't like it. Doesn't taste good for me at all. It's too soft with strong fishy smell. Okay, I know it's a fish satay.... I would say... it's not to my liking.

Peanut sauce and chili paste served with satay
And lastly, this two bowls of unique satay sauces is a must while having sate Kajang. A big bowl of peanut sauce and a small bowl of chilli paste is served after placing your order. The peanut sauce is different from other vendors. Peanut chunks are boiled till soft and yet tasty. Add in some chili paste if you prefer something spicy.

It's late at night and you feel like having something?? Here is one of the suggestion..... It's crowded at times but parking is convenient here!

Look out for my next post- Nasi Kukus by Aliaa @ R&R Awan Besar, Kesas Highway

The Loaf @ Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

Again and again and again...... and it's Pavilion again! This time, I suggested The Loaf .

The Loaf is a famous bakery that first operated in Langkawi and then expanded their business with it's new outlet at Pavilion KL in year 2007. It used to be a popular topic that everyone was talking about as it is a lifestyle bakery cum bistro co owned by our former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir with Jiro Suzuki.

So, is it the quality of the food that creates the hoo-hahs or people are just visiting because of the earlier that I have mentioned? We will find out soon......

The Loaf @ Level 4,Pavilion KL

And I ordered a breakfast set for dinner! Not trying to be special, it's just that I wanted to have something light that day.

All Day Breakfast- Tun's Favorite @ RM 22
  • choice of lamb, beef or chicken curry
  • in house toasted bread
  • soft boiled egg
  • orange juice
  • coffee or tea
Opted for curry chicken which was served in generous portion. It's more like an authentic Malaysian tasting curry with tender chicken meat and aromatic and mild gravy. Eating the in house freshly baked soft toasted bread with the curry chicken is simply pleasing!

Chilli Prawn Pasta served with garlic bread @ RM 30
Pasta choices: spaghetti, fettuccine or linguine
Had a try on the spaghetti, it's cooked to soft but with texture (al dente), with a slight resistance in the center when chewed. The mixture of the ingredients for the sauce were well blend as in olive oil, salt, garlic and chilli pepper. As for the prawns, I have not tried it. Fresh I guessed... or else the plate wouldn't be empty at the end of the meal.

At Pavilion KL, The Loaf at Level 3 offers bakeries products and do serve drinks too and for the main dishes do go to The Loaf at Level 4. There are not many choices for main dishes but this visit turned out to be more than satisfactory. Take a look at The Loaf's Pavilion KL's menu at http://www.theloaf.net/menu_pavilion_kl.htm you might be interested!

And...............Yes! It's a place that serves good food!

ALIYAA Island Restaurant & Bar @ Bukit Damansara

Drove all the way from Sunway Pyramid to Bijan Bar & Restaurant KL only to find out that it is closed on Monday. Hmpf!! Shouldn't have canceled our dinner last week. Anyway, there are places else where to dine right? From Changkat Bukit Bintang we drove to Damansara and finally it's Aliyaa Island restaurant & bar , the place that I wanted to revisit quite sometime ago.
Okay... it's only quarter passed six.. so early for dinner?? Yes.......

Aliyaa Island Restaurant & Bar@ Bukit Damansara
Aliyaa Island Restaurant & Bar is more like a place to chill out with all kind of alchoholic drinks as well as non alcoholic drinks. But, they do serve authentic Sri Lankan food too. It's a restaurant & bar that operates in a bugalow with simple and yet elegantly decorated interior. Definitely, a perfect place with comfortable environement to dine in. Some information to share- if you would like to spend 3 days dining at this area, at the left of Aliyaa Island Restaurant & Bar would be The Courtyard Garden and at the right of it is the Jarrod & Rawlins, 3 different restaurant operating in 3 different bungalows. Eateries neighbourhood??

Started the early dinner with........

Rassam Soup @ RM 6
A famous Indian soup, which is believed to be originated from Southern India. Commonly serve by most of the Indian restaurants. Not as spicy as expected but sour enough, it's a tease for the taste buds.

Kiribath - Coconut Milk Rice
Kiribath- coconut milk triangle rice served with spicy curry chicken @ RM 18.00 (The Sri Lankan Nasi Lemak). The coconut milk triangle rice comes with half fried boiled egg , katta sambol (pounded maldivian fish flakes, dried shrimps, shallots, chillies & chilly powders fried till dry), seeni sambol (sambal with sweet onions and jaggary sugar) and pounded green bird's eye chilli pepper (cili padi) mixed with lime juice. All of the 3 spicy condiments tasted real good for me.

As for the rice, it is a bit different from our Nasi Lemak. The rice is prepared with very thick coconut milk and it's a bit wet when served.

Kiribath - Spicy Curry Chicken
The curry tasted different. Thick and rich curry gravy with slight taste of coconut milk. Tasted rather good for me.I guess it's prepared with some spice and a little bit of butter?

Appam Galore @ RM 20
Abbi is the Elephant in Chief (Owner) of the business. As stated in the menu, Appam Galore is one of Abbi's favorite and we have decided to give this a try.
Pick your choice of 4 appam (plain, broken egg or sweet coconut milk) served with katta sambol (spicy maldivian fish) and seeni sambol ( sweet onions and jaggary sugar). Definitely not a filling meal and I would say , it is unique to be served in this way but taste wise, it's just alright!

Vatilaapam @ RM 8
A Sri Lankan egg dessert, also known as coconut creme caramel. Not really sweet but the fragrant of the jaggery sugar mixed with coconut milk makes the dessert an outstanding one.

All kinds of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks
In Aliyaa, there are over 50 choices of single malk whisky collection. Wanna get drunk? Some spicy food with gallons of alcohols might help!

Address & Other information

By the way, their signature dish - Sri Lankan Crab! Do try!

Restaurant Fu Gua Thong (天天来苦瓜汤) @ Bandar Puteri Puchong

Bitter, one of the four basic taste, a harsh taste that many of us might not feast on. Had a bitter experience last week......not that bitter actually

Restaurant Fu Gua Thong (天天来苦瓜汤)@ Bandar Puteri Puchong
A newly opened restaurant that serves bitter gourd soup and home cooked dishes.

Bitter Gourd Soup
The signature dish of the restaurant that attracts the crowd. Bitter gourd soup boiled with sliced lean pork and pork liver. Surprisingly, the soup does not as bitter as how I expected it to be. In fact. after the first sip, I felt a fresh and cooling sensation in my mouth. Taste alright, feels good.....

Signature deep fried pork
Deep fried pork marinated with 5 spice powder and fermented bean curd. It's flavorful as the marinade absorbed evenly into the meat. The crunchy and crispy outer layer of the deep fried pork is aromatic too.

Fish fillet with ginger and onions
A home cooked style dish-fish fillet with ginger and onions. Nothing special but pleasing in taste.

As I walked into the restaurant, I noticed that there is one dish that every table has ordered and that would be their signature bitter gourd soup. That's what that attracts the crowd!

A bitter experience for you too?

Claypot Station Restaurant @ Kota Damansara

Clay pot is a technique of cooking food in an unglazed clay pot. The unglazed clay pots are normally soaked in water for about 15- 30 minutes to absorb water before cooking. The process of soaking and the result of clay pot cooking may lower the fats of the dish and yet flavorful.

Claypot Station is the restaurant where you can enjoy dishes prepared in clay pots.

Claypot Station Restaurant @ Dataran Sunway , Kota Damansara

Asam Curry Chicken @ RM 12.90
Love the asam curry chicken!! The hot asam curry gravy tasted real good. The tantalizing aroma of the pot of hot asam curry chicken makes us sweat profusely and yet we continue to scoop for more of it!

Asam Curry Fish Fillet @ RM 12.90

Because we love the asam curry chicken so much that during our next visit, we ordered asam curry fish fillet. The asam curry tasted the same, as good as before but the fish fillet turned out to be a disappointment. The fish fillet were fried and because it was served in a clay pot and the dish remain hot for quite some time, the fried fish fillet turned soft.

Pickled lettuce Dou Fu @ RM 7.90
Another dish that pleased me, pickled lettuce dou fu, prepared with simple ingredients but delicious!

Hot & Sour Salted Vegetable @ RM 7.90

Claypot Station Restaurant serve flavorful and warming claypot dishes. It is also claimed that the dishes are prepared without using MSG!! Well, it's a good hot try!
